The Inclusive Mosque Initiative is an intersectional feminist mosque dedicated to creating inclusive, safer places of worship and spiritual practice for marginalised communities and families, especially non-traditional families. We are committed to reviving a rights-based Islam that challenges all forms of oppression.

IMI was named one of the 50 New Radicals of 2018.

About the Trustee role

We are looking to grow and develop our Board with new trustees who are passionate about our mission, especially in our commitment to dismantle intersecting systems of oppression. 

As a Trustee, you will shape the future of the charity and how we operate. Our trustees meet quarterly. We draw from our lived experience to inform our vision for Inclusive Mosque and provide safer spaces for Muslims who are often excluded from mosques. We are looking to fill 2-3 Trustee positions and are seeking candidates who have experience in one or more fields:

  • Charity governance
  • HR
  • Employment and charity law

Our ideal candidates would also have lived experience of being from a marginalised Muslim community and as such we will prioritise women, genderqueer, Black, disabled and Shi’a applicants.

This is an unpaid position, because charity law in the UK does not allow trustees of a charity to be paid to be a trustee, no matter how marginalising that practise is. We do not agree with this, but we are bound by the Commission’s rules. We will provide expenses for travel, subsistence, personal assistant costs, childcare and/or other caring responsibilities.

We ask that all applicants answer the following questions in the medium of your choice. This could be a video, voice note, powerpoint presentation, illustration, comic strip, whatever you feel will allow you to communicate what you want to say in the way that is easiest for you. We also have an application form for those who would prefer a guided structure. With your application please include your contact details and your preferred method of communication. 

  1. What experiences have affected your access to spaces, especially mosques?
  2. What skills and perspectives can you bring to the work of a charity like the Inclusive Mosque Initiative?
  3. What values and practices are important to you when working in a team?

We don’t expect anyone to spend a lot of time on the application and would prefer short, succinct introductions to who you are, what you care about and what your skills are. 

We will aim to speak with or video call every eligible applicant so you have the opportunity to elaborate further on anything you want to emphasise in your application. If you need an interpreter during the conversation, IMI will cover the cost.

Please note:

  • Applicants must be 18+ and be resident in the UK.
  • Currently our trustee meetings are taking place online but when safe we hope to be able to provide in-person and virtual attendance as options to trustees.
  • If it is unfeasible for you to come to London for trustee meetings, we would cover your travel and hotel costs for at least one trustee meeting per year.
