Muslim Voices from The Edge

Muslim Voices from The Edge

Concept Summary

This anthology will be the first of its kind in the UK, bringing together and celebrating a range of different perspectives on contemporary Islam. Contributions have only one thing in common; they include an autobiographical questioning of the edges and peripheries of contemporary Islam, whilst looking at the role of authority, community, ritual, theological knowledge, spiritual experience and everyday religious interpretation through an autobiographical lens. Taken together, contributions prove how Islam continues to significantly matter in the lives of many different Muslims, and reveals some of the ways in which is does matter. Whilst the stories within this book are less often-heard ones, we believe that they display, and enrich the kaleidoscope that is Islamic experience and as such, need to be heard.

The autobiographical contributions take a huge variety of formats, ranging from traditional autobiographical essays, short stories, poems, reflective prose, to photographic essays and artistic pieces. We will be particularly attentive to include younger, less well-known Muslim voices (of activists, lawyers, artists, designers, bloggers, musicians, space-builders and policy-drafters, for example) who hold a variety of interpretations of Islam. Whilst contributions are primarily from British Muslims, the anthology also contains some international voices, reflecting the global scope of The Inclusive Mosque Initiative. We envision this proposed anthology to be celebratory rather than analytic, global in scope, and thus marketable to a range of audiences.

CALLING ALL MUSLIMS!
BE PART OF THE NEW IMI ANTHOLOGY
Muslim Voices from The Edge

We’re working on an anthology of Muslim voices and are looking for JUST TEN more contributions. Contributions must be autobiographical in some way and include WHY ISLAM MATTERS to you and HOW it does. Contributions can take a huge variety of formats; traditional autobiographical essays, short stories, poems, academic and theological writing, photographic projects, reflective prose, art or even poetry.

We welcome submissions from EVERYONE who identifies, in some way, as Muslim. Essays must be under 5000 words but poems can be just a few lines. We are really keen to have a range of contributions in different forms, so if you have an idea but aren’t sure whether it would be suitable for submission, drop us an email to discuss!

Contributions can be anonymous or use pseudonyms but please note we will require a short bio and photo (of some kind). If you’re interested in submitting a long piece we strongly recommend you email an abstract/summary before writing it! EVERYONE WELOME TO SUBMIT!
