An update on our Feminist Imam Programme fundraiser

In late April, we launched a fundraiser for our Feminist Imam Programme. Thanks to our donors, we have raised 21% of the money we need – that’s a huge achievement already. Here’s what we’ve managed to accomplish since the launch of this fundraiser.

  • We have 3 imam trainings in development for launch in Spring 2022.

1) For imams who want to lead Friday prayers.

2) For imams who want to officiate marriage ceremonies for couples of all sexes and genders.

3) For imams who want to provide longer-term pastoral support to the Inclusive Mosque community.

These trainings will be open to women, genderqueer and nonbinary people only. Later in 2022, we intend to open them up to men too.

  • We’re developing an anti-abuse marriage contract for couples which stipulates what action is to be taken in the case of abuse or major deceit. The contract will come with guidelines for imams so that any imam in the UK can develop a better understanding of domestic abuse and how to prevent further harm occurring when someone asks for help leaving an abuse marriage.
  • We are working on a facilitated LGBTQIA+ support space which will only be open to LGBTQIA+ members of the community. Right now, we’re designing the facilitator training so it might be a while before we launch this space but it’s in development.
  • We are working with counsellors and mental health professionals to build a sustainable support system for Muslim parents and families of folks from LGBTQIA+ communities. The aim is for families to build on their strengths and become even better sources of support for their loved ones.

We’re immensely proud of what we’ve been able to achieve so far and we’re excited to continue to develop this vital work. You can support our work by donating to the fundraiser here and by sharing the fundraiser with your friends and family. Every £1 donated goes a long way and every share helps us to reach our target.

Thank you for your support!
