Raise Your Gaze – Gender Variance & Sexual Diversity in Islam

Free Word Centre, 60 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3GA, London. £5-£7

Gender variance & sexual diversity have always been a part of human nature, and of course a part of Islamic history and practice. And yet, this reality is often erased through patriarchal, colonial narratives.

We want to undestand how and why this has happened, what this looks like in the context of Islam and Muslim spaces, and how we can contribute to resisting it.

Join us for the fourth instalment of #RaiseYourGaze as Ghazala Anwar, Leyla Jagiella, Suhraiya Jivraj, Sabah Choudrey and others help us unpack:

– Historical & contemporary perspectives on gender & sexuality in Islam
– Prophet Lut and homosexuality in the Quran
– Sexual ethics & polyamory
– Forgotten Trans histories
– Gender beyond the binary
– Community healing & resistance to homophobic & transphobic violence
– Queer-Muslim alliance building
– Writing as healing practice
– Self-defence
– How to be a good ally to LGBTQI+ Muslims
