Community Debrief: Far Right Violence and Increase in Police Powers

Online

12.30pm

Online. Free to attend. Please register via Eventbrite and make sure your Zoom display name is the same as the name you’ve registered with.

We invite you to an online gathering of Muslims in the Inclusive Mosque community to process what we’re experiencing. There will be room to discuss whatever is coming up for you including:

  • Honour the lives of Bebe, Elsie and Alice who were murdered on Monday 29th July
  • What it feels like to be part of groups whose oppression by some Muslims is used to punish the wider Muslim community, which also ends up harming us as Muslims.
  • What do we need to support mosques and mosque communities who may have been the source or site of our own trauma and/or oppression.
  • What we can do to resist the normalisation of policing when we know increased police powers and surveillance will negatively impact Muslim communities, especially Black Muslim communities and anyone protesting against genocide or climate change or in support of families affected by police violence.

Because we are concerned about safety at our events at this time, we will require all attendees to have their cameras on. Please make sure your display name on Zoom is the name you use to register here.

This event will be useful for Muslims who are isolated from Muslim communities. This is a Muslim-only event because we face unique challenges at this time including how to survive physically and spiritually while fielding questions and request from non-Muslims. Inclusive Mosque is providing space for Muslims to process these challenges and resist the Islamophobia we face, even from our loved ones. If you are not Muslim but would like to support as an ally, please email admin@inclusivemosque.org

Code of Conduct

We’re carrying out this event knowing the risks our organisation and our community face at this time. We are asking all attendees to commit to showing up in a way that doesn’t put Inclusive Mosque or the people who attend at further risk. This means we will not make room for name-calling, racism of any kind, or incitement towards hatred or violence. As a charity, we cannot discuss political parties but we can critique government policy and mobilise towards changes to government policy that would address injustice. We will be sending a community agreement out to everyone who signs up to attend this event and we expect everyone to read and respect it.
