Stonewall Was A Riot: Resisting Legacies of Oppression

To commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots and continue the spirit and mission of those resisting oppression IMI is holding this interactive workshop for LGBTQIA+ Muslims to:

• Learn about some of the key issues around the Stonewall riots and protests
• Understand how these issues continue to disproportionately impact the LGBTQIA+ and Muslim, Black and brown communities today
• Learn about practical ways to resist systems of oppression

We’ll discuss police surveillance and brutality, sex worker rights, racism, queer- and transphobia, and the ways these systems of oppression intersect. Then we’ll explore some things we can do to keep ourselves and our communities safe.

This workshop will be facilitated by Maryam Din (they/them). Maryam is a queer Muslim activist, writer and speaker. They are passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion and do a lot of campaigning and organising locally. Maryam is an experienced public speaker often sharing their personal experiences on race, culture, religion, LGBTQ communities, community engagement and social justice and activism.

They have recently started their new job at Stonewall as a Client Account Manager working on LGBTQ workplace inclusion. Previously, Maryam worked in a students’ union focusing on equality, diversity and inclusion and postgraduate student representation. With a special blend of cheeky humour, honesty and vulnerability they fight hard for people of different genders, sexualities, faiths and cultures in championing human rights and liberation.

As usual, IMI will aim to centre the voices of marginalised people, inviting genderqueer, women, nonbinary, disabled and Black people to take up space here. You do not have to have your camera on during the event.

BSL interpretation will be provided during this event, and live captioning via Zoom is available. We will take two breaks during this event.

The discussion will not be recorded. Please only register if you are a LGBTQIA+ Muslim. You will receive a link to the event in the afternoon on Monday 28th June. Register via Eventbrite.
