Supporting LGBT+ Family Members

IMI is committed to supporting Muslim families, including the families we choose for ourselves. We started our support group with the intention of helping families to be better advocates for LGBT+ members of our community. This often begins by understanding the ways Islam affirms LGBT+ identities.

The primary aim of the event is to bring together Muslim parents, siblings, cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents to learn together, and to discuss feelings and experiences of having LGBT+ relatives to understand how best to support them.

Our events feature imam-led workshops on gender and sexual diversity in Islam to address theological questions you may have.

We also have sessions led by counsellors and facilitators where you can explore your feelings and any concerns you may have. These are also places where you can provide support for each other by sharing your experiences.

Our events are confidential, non-judgemental and supportive space, and you will be free to ask questions either during the workshop or in private.

We do not yet have a date for our next event but we will announce it in our newsletter. You can sign up to our mailing list to receive our newsletters.
